My head in the clouds | Make Your Own Book

Book review

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham LincolnTeam of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this book very much, despite the fact that it took me such a long time to complete. The first portion of the book giving background to the story was boring to me, and challenging to stay engaged. It reads much like a text book and not a story in my opinion. Where the book really began for me was when Lincoln was elected President. Once elected until the end of the book I found the story to be very engaging, and I was able to really look forward to the opportunities when I could read. Lincoln was a master at reading people & understanding how dynamic situation could/would play out. He always did what was best for the Union, in the big picture. He did some unpopular and even questionable moves for himself politically, but the were the right thing to do for the Union. Wonderfully refreshing to learn of someone in government doing the right thing for the country, and not what's best for them or their party. Lincoln's speeches were so well done. His skill for story tell, public speaking, and ability to communicate a concept for all to understand regardless of social status/education was amazing. He was a very empathic man, and the suffrage of the civil war effected him deeply. His cabinet comprised of many great men, but the beauty was that he fact that they were his rivals and that was how he kept himself educated/informed of all the many aspects/angels of how events would play out or shape the country.
